Ogham Staves
Draw from the Celtic tree alphabet — 20 staves, each tied to a tree and its lore — as a single stave for guidance, past-present-future, or a five-stave spread.
Ogham (pronounced OH-am) is an early medieval Celtic alphabet, first carved into standing stones and wood from around the 4th century CE. Each letter is a series of strokes cut across or along a central line, like notches on the edge of a twig. Beyond writing, the tradition links each letter to a tree, giving Ogham its name as the Celtic tree alphabet.
Each character, called a few (plural feda), pairs a tree with a cluster of meaning: Beith the birch of new beginnings, Duir the oak of strength and doorways, Ruis the elder of endings and renewal. The Celts held trees to be sacred beings bridging the earthly world and the Otherworld, so a stave is at once a letter, a tree and a symbol to reflect on.
GemZen gives you the 20 staves of the tree alphabet with their trees, keywords, divinatory meanings and lore. Choose a spread, draw, and read the staves together as one message shaped by the question you brought — a quiet prompt for reflection, kept in your history to return to as things unfold.
How it works in GemZen
1
Choose a spread
Draw a single stave for guidance, three staves for past, present and future, or a five-stave spread for situation, challenge, advice and outcome.
2
Draw the staves
Hold your question and draw from the 20 staves of the tree alphabet. Each stave lands in its position, carrying its tree and meaning.
